stoma coverings
Jun 16th, 2010 at 9:44pm

Does anyone have a good suggestion for water proof stoma coverings?  I'd like to find something I can use while swimming/boating when I am in and out of the water a lot.  The ampatch doesn't seem to work for me for some reason.  I have tried multiple styles but they always seem to end up not holding the seal and leaking.  thanks.

Hi Julie,

I get most of my supplies from COS Medical and they have a water proof tape that has worked well for me.  All I use as a dressing is a 2x2 gause folded in half with a piece of surgical tape to hold it in place.

Hi Julie,
I have been using Mestopore S coverings for years.  They are waterproof.  There are two types of Mestopore coverings, but get the Mestopore S ones.  The regular Mestopore coverings are just for one-time use, but the Mestopore S coverings can be unstuck and reused for several days just by replacing the inside gauze with a folded up kleenex or toilet paper.

Dixie,
I would like to know where you get the Mestopore S stoma covers.  I didn't know there was more than one kind of Mestopore.

Thanks,
Laurann

Hi Laurann,

I'm in Alberta, Canada and the place I get mine from is Calgary Co-op Home Healthcare:

http://tst.calgarycoophomehealthcare.com/about_us/index.php

There is an e-mail address at the bottom of the page or you could phone Vicki there and specify the Mestopore S covers.  I can't remember the cost as it was a long time ago that I ordered some.

There is also a place in Toronto:

http://www.starkmanshealth.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Mestopore

Mestopore Safetac Pads (20) for $54.70

I did a search for US companies that carry these Mestopore S (Safetac) coverings, but couldn't find any.  Perhaps one of the above two Canadian companies can send you some.

I know they seem extremely expensive, but in the past I have been able to get almost a week out of one individual Mestopore S covering.

Laurann,

I did some more searching on-line & asked the manufacturer where I could find the Mestopore S coverings in the U.S.  I got a reply back from:

Hilary.Freedman@molnlycke.com

She said in her e-mail to me that if I send her my zip code information that she would have the local Molnlycke representative contact me.

Maybe if you e-mail her, you will have some luck in finding these coverings close to you.

- Dixie

I emailed the Mestopore  S contact and received a response.

The Mestopore S is not available in the US.

She did not offer any other info.

Julie - I wear the AM-Patch G3.  I know what you mean about them falling off.  I have found that if you put on a skin prep prior to the patch, that helps quite a bit.  I tried a product called Skin-Tak and I was able to swim in the ocean for two hours straight and then go do other activities for several hours without an issue.  I found this by accident.  I was going thru some of my old Palms supply kit and I found these wipes.  They worked great for me.

Julie, Have been using Molnlycke Mestopore stoma dressing for years. No problem, waterproof. Also use 3M Cavalon No Sting Barrier wipes and have eliminated skin irritation.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I am hoping to have a scar reviosion done soon around the stoma area (from hernia repairs).  This should help too.
